Taking the step to book your first therapy appointment is significant. For many people, it comes after months — sometimes years — of considering it, talking yourself out of it, and finally deciding you're ready. That's worth acknowledging.
But once the appointment is booked, a new wave of uncertainty often shows up: What will happen? What do I say? What if I don't know how to do this? As a counsellor in Vernon, BC, I want to take some of that uncertainty away.
What the First Session Is Really For
Your first session is not a test. You won't be evaluated, diagnosed, or expected to have everything figured out. It's primarily about getting to know each other. I'll ask about what's brought you to therapy, what's been going on, and what you're hoping to get out of our work together. It's completely okay if you're not sure — "I just know something needs to change" is a perfectly valid place to start.
What You Might Feel
First sessions can bring a range of emotions: relief at finally talking to someone, anxiety about being vulnerable with a stranger, grief as you put words to things you've been carrying quietly. All of that is normal. You won't be pushed to share more than you're ready to.
A Few Things That Help
Come as you are — no prepared speech needed. Be honest about what's hard. Notice how you feel afterward. And give it a few sessions — the therapeutic relationship takes time to build.
You've Already Done the Hard Part
Deciding to reach out is often the hardest step. If you're in Vernon, BC or the Okanagan area and ready to book, reach out today. I'd love to connect.
